The Chronicles of Narnia [Box Set]
by C.S. Lewis
I read the first book in the third grade for school, and loved it. I was given the boxed set for my birthday or christmas later that year.
This series is one that is absolute magic when you are a child, but going back to as an adult is never really the same. I reread some a few years ago and was shocked at how much my childs mind had filled in way back then. I actually think that this is part of the magic of Lewis' story - that believing in the reality of Narnia is something you must come to AS a child.
This was the first time I remember realizing that words could mean more than just what they said literally. I was 8 and the Christian imagery in the story hit me very hard. This surprises me now, knowing first hand how hard it is to teach symbolism to children.
The symbolism didn't bother me then, though we were not really church goers. I simply accepted its presence as part of the story. It doesn't really bother me now, but it does now somewhat color my feelings about the stories.
