This book was a gut punch. I haven’t really ever read a book about Puerto Rico or from the perspective of Puerto Ricans. I know this is a fictional book, but it felt very real, and I know a lot of the events within the book did actually happen. I need to learn more and this book has pushed me to do that learning. Beyond that it was definitely a book where you’re rooting for the main character all the way, and you hope that she can learn to love herself, and that even if she can’t that she can let love into her life. It really was a very very well written novel and I will be looking for more from Xochitl Gonzalez.
