The Wraith King by Juliette Cross
3.5

Conflicted about this one.

First off, round of applause for the most gorgeous cover to ever exist.

The premise is good, the story is solid but the writing just felt so flat to me. It’s SUCH a cool world and magic system and I just felt unconnected to the characters the entire time. 30%-50% was such a snore fest I was ready to DNF. and sadly, I felt like I could DNF at any point in the story.

But the story itself is so fucking cool. I loved how intricate the world is with its histories and magic system. I just wanted that much depth to be put towards the MCs both separately and together. Like, all we know about the MMC Goll is that he was abused by dad, broke out, plotted to take over, takes over. Like, there’s no personality aside from “be king” and “Una”. And Una….she likes to heal people…which if that’s your birth talent I just feel like that would fall more into a line of work? So also no personality.

Not once did I feel like they were soulmates, despite being told it over and over. JC really nails the “I don’t trust my reader to pick up what I’m putting down” writing. I’ll give her another chance but really hoping her writing will have matured/a trad editor will have ironed these writing issues out.

I won’t continue in the series. It seems to be an interconnected standalone series so Goll and Una’s story is wrapped up. There is a cliffhanger for the next couple but otherwise it’s a tidy ending to stop at.
