Really nice ending, but there is one reason why my review is not five stars. The book is split into two perspectives, but one of the characters is really privileged and it bothers me that she points out her mother’s snootiness when she is equally as upper class. Also, the narration of the book seems the same between the two characters and their voices do not really differ, which I think is just a lack of consideration on the author’s part. And now that I think about it, there is another reason why this book felt a little flat. The author did not spend enough time building the relationships between different characters, and a lot of what was supposed to be drama just ended up seeming dramatized. Yes, war stories can be moving, but the author failed to capture small moments of empathy and human nature between the characters. It felt like most of the time, the author was looking for drama that would dazzle instead of the story that could be touching in itself.
