A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

5.0

”I know my life’s meaningful because I’m a good friend. I love my friends, and I care about them, and I think I make them happy.”

Do I think this book is perfect? No.
This is very much an emotional 5 star read.
And you’re being warned, this book has about every trigger warning known to man.
Quite like the other characters in the book, I found myself being drawn to Jude. He made me angry. There were times I wanted to shake him, yell at him for the decisions he was making, for the things he was thinking. Yet, I have this overwhelming sense of compassion for him. Where whenever I think about him, I begin to tear up. I felt the frustration the other characters felt when they were trying to make him see his worth. To tell him he’s beautiful.
And Jude’s past.
Jesus Christ.
There is one part of his story, Philadelphia, where I made myself emotionally numb because it was too much.
I wish we would’ve seen a little more of Malcolm and JB (I loved JB’s pettiness). But the bond Jude had with Andy and Richard? GAH! And goodness gracious, Harold and Willem? Even bigger GAH!
Their relationships with Jude tugged on my heart strings.
And kept tugging.
And kept tugging..
This book is heartbreaking.
It is exquisitely and beautifully written.
I will carry these characters, and their story, with me for a very long time.
