All-Star Superman, Vol. 1 by Grant Morrison

5.0

As a final Superman story, I prefer Grant Morrison’s optimistic version here to Alan Moore’s nihilistic horror story “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” I also prefer Morrison’s reversion of Lex Luthor to the pre-Crisis mad scientist with a grudge over the boring “cool” corporate villain we’ve mostly had for the last 30 odd years.

This version of Clark Kent is a lot of fun, too. The way he blunders his way through “accidentally” saving people is a delight, and verbal sparring through an interview with an oblivious Lex Luthor, both of them loading almost every word they say with a double meaning, is probably the best bit of writing in the comic.

Can’t wait to revisit the second half.
