As Rich as a Rogue by Jade Lee

DELIGHTFULLY FUN AND ENTERTAINING

I was so swept up in this story. Mari and Peter have a bit of a history. When he returns to England after six years, Mari is frustrated that the cause of her social difficulties has landed right in front of her. He's just as irksome as ever. Then end up placing a wager: who can teach a parakeet to speak a new phrase. If she wins, he must apologize on his knees for "accidentally" giving her the title Wayward Welsh. If he wins, he will give her a chaste kiss. They have a playful banter that is overlaid with an almost-sexual tension mixed with annoyance. It is a lot of fun to see them going back and forth in their barbs. I loved seeing in Peter's head and glimpsing the vulnerability and the longing that has been building for six years. He returns to town knowing that he wants Mari, knowing how he wants to shape his career, and knowing that he must find a way to restore the family's title his father has run into serious debt. Mari has spent so much time being boring and proper, that it was fun to see her let loose. She is determined, a listmaker who needs order. She has this longing inside to finally marry and settle into her life. So this was something I think made her easy to relate to. Putting Peter and Mari together is explosive. I loved the tension and seeing them give in to their desires, even in the briefest of moments. In addition to these two, there is a cast of characters that add intrigue and drama to the story. The other suitors were fun, but I was almost disappointed that Ash didn't try harder to win the lady's hand. I would definitely look for other books in the series. For me, this was just an absolute delight to read and I could not put it down.

I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
