For those of you who read my From Blood and Ash review, you know that my main problem with it was Hawke. I fell in love with every aspect but him. I am so happy to say that his character was infinitely better this time around. I predicted I would enjoy him more as Casteel, and my guess was spot on because I appreciated his shedding all false pretences and being truthful with Poppy.

Casteel and Poppy’s banter was just the best. I loved how despite the fantasy genre, there were still a few lighter moments where I could take a breather from all the darker aspects of the plot.

“So, instead of telling me nothing is wrong, I’m hoping you’ll be honest with me.”
“I’m hoping that hawk returns, and instead of snatching up poor helpless animals and children, it grabs you.”

And what to say of Poppy. I think I liked her even more than in book 1. She was just so intuitive, not only because of her gifts but because of how detailed and well-thought out her past was. I loved how more light was shed on her family history, and can’t wait to learn even more in book 3.

“Besides, I doubt I’d be able to sleep.” “You could try.” “So could you.” “Even if I wasn’t the Prince, I would be up here,” he replied. I lifted my gaze to his. “Even if I wasn’t about to become a Princess, I would be up here.”

And that cliffhanger? Incredible. I don’t know how I expected this book to end, but I in no way predicted that it would be quite so mystical. I swear those last few pages had me totally ensnared. I have SO many questions begging to be answered, and am particularly excited to see how Poppy’s gifts continue to progress!
