The Willow King by Meelis Friedenthal

3.0

If you're looking for the incredibly historically accurate musings of a possible insane student as he studies...something during the 1600s, with low fantasy and fairy undertones, then this is the book for you.

For me, it was very dense and hard to read despite how beautifully it was written. The turns of phrase and descriptions painted a brilliant picture of the world Laurentius lived in – the people, the town, everything, was depicted with a vibrancy that made it easy to image everything going on. But I never really knew what was going on with the narrative. Laurentius muddled along being ill, the people starved, and nothing gets resolved. It's open ended in a way that just raises more questions, and I'm not sure if I'm left intrigued or frustrated.
