Death Coming Up the Hill by Chris Crowe

3.0

I've been trying to organize my thoughts on this book for a few days now. On the one hand, I applaud the author for the creative and beautiful manner in which he commemorated those American soldiers who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. How tedious it must have been to write a story so that the total number of syllables is equivalent to the total number of lives lost in 1968. And despite my reluctance to read an entire book written in haiku form, I found that the style did not distract me from the content. On the other hand, had the same story been written in the more common paragraph form, give or take a few words here and there, I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much. If separate ratings were possible, I'd rate the style 4 stars and the content 2.
