If you are going into this looking for something that gives the same spark as between two fires do not pick this up. It obviously is not a bad book. If you are really into DND and fantasy you will love this. Me personally? I love dnd but rarely touch fantasy novels (personal preference. Something something Sci-Fi better. I just like knowing that things have a scientific explanation that doesnt involve magic spell go burr). I enjoyed the book at the very beginning, it was fun, cute, drew me in. But somewhere in the middle it started feeling repetitive, and by the end I was dragging myself to the end.
There were a lot of twists and turns but they didn't really help anything. Too many twists get a little loss in a world where the rules and lore get tangled outside the rules of normal life. I LOVED between two fires but This book wasnt a hit for me. Maybe because I was expecting it to be as good.
However my biggest gripe and ick in this book. In most books, the worst thing you can do is write out singing and songs. Oh my god. This book has some singing. A lot of songs. A lot of the lore is in the songs. The songs you can not hear. A LOT of it. It frustrates me like no other. By the 5 sea shanty I was over it. Im sorry. I hate it so much.
I loved all the characters tho. Norrigal my queen, get behind me. And at times the unpredictability was exciting..until it started to overstimulate me.
Also the ending was unsatisfying. It didnt heal anything in me. Didnt make the singing worth it. Not at all. In fact with all the singing I wouldve expected some grand theatrical ending that tied everything together and made me say "oh yes! Give me more"
I actually put the book down for several weeks. I had to switch to the audio book to get through it. On 2x speed. That being said if u like fantasy and overstimulation this is the book for you.
