I couldn’t tell if it was the fact that the book was translated from another language, my own failure in comprehension, or the effect of the sheep’s POV that kept parts of the story at such a remove from me. The sheep are delightful, and seeing their view of the universe was at amusing, frustrating, and bewildering by turns. One sheep’s zen revelation and the flock’s understanding of human religion was balanced by some long meandering digressions into ovine philosophy.
The ending was a disappointment. A character goes off into the universe newly aware that her inaction might have been a factor in a suicide? And who was the midnight visitor with the gun? and really, a beautiful woman seduces her would-be killer?. Ewwww.
Graphic: Death
Moderate: Murder
Minor: Drug use, Suicide
