I really loved this book. i love the time slip stuff and I felt like i identified with the different characters at different times. I felt i could see myself reflected in actions, decisions, and humor of the characters.
I was moved by the grief of the characters and heavily understood wishing for just one magical thing to be real that you grew up believing. Somehow the loss of a loved one can make the worlds lack of true magic hurt so much worse. A lot of the twists in the book I figured out well before they happened but that was not really important. The book was not about the twists and revelations. It was about the journey along the way and the characters as they realized things about themselves.
Iwan was incredibly attractive and alluring as a MMC. Like, yes please. I love all the discussions of cooking and food. That is always so partial to my heart. I enjoyed how my opinions of characters changed throughout the book. From the auntbeing really cool to realizing how much she damaged Clementine with her own issues. I'm mad at her for lying and never trying to take a chance at anything. as well Iwan being frustrated with who he had become in the future to realizing that it is was actually Clementine that was refusing to change. Refusing to allow any actual change at all to happen. That she was in some ways an unreliable narrator. I found it incredibly interesting that Clementine was both so opposed to change and yet refused to actually commit to anything. Never putting photos up at work or anything. It was an interesting concept for someone to be like a leaf on the wind who refuses to put down any roots but also opposed to the change in those around her.
The only issue I had at all with the book was thatWhen she saw the aunt in the apartment they left that up to your imagination. I know the author was working through her own grief and that we cannot see those that have passed again and get closure but this is a story not real life. Either write it or don't. Don't do it halfway.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of her work in the future.
