The more I’ve thought about it, the less I liked this book. I think there were some really beautiful things about it and some things that really took away from it.
Loves
  • The way her best friends were always there for her; the power of friendship
  • The realities of the nonstop efforts in war
  • The reality of women being unappreciated after they returned
  • The complicated family dynamics
  • Frankie being a flawed character

Things that ruined it for me
  • Absolutely no trigger or content warnings for the book left me incredibly triggered at times, particularly in part 2 which has honestly been the main reason I’ve been thinking about the book bc I’m now having stress dreams. Incredibly irresponsible on the part of the author in my opinion. War things are expected with the setting but other things are not.
  • The fact that every man she meets is like automatically in love with her????
  • The whole Rye story line. Just. No.
  • Honestly, love stories in general took away from the core of the story and made some things feel forced.
  • The fact that every time something terrible could happen, it did. Like always the worst case scenario
  • I hated where Frankie ended up. I think it’s a beautiful goal but
so much stress was put on her realizing she wanted to be a mom still when she got pregnant and then she just apparently no longer wanted that or love and it didn’t feel authentic to the character that had been presented the whole time
  • Her dad and his stupid heroes wall
