The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan
4.0
Continuing to build on the successes of the past parts of the series, Shadow Rising was a exciting read, with only a few slow moments.
Like the rest of the Wheel of Time books up to this point, Shadow Rising has multiple character perspectives, each in very different areas, with very different pacing; and much like the rest of the series so far, some of these sections are stronger then others.
Rand and Matt in the Waste is riveting, does some dynamic and excellent world building, while also expanding on pre-existing characters.
Perrin, returning to the Two Rivers, gives us one of my favorite arcs in the series! Its wonderful because it helps highlight how much the main cast has grown since leaving their village.
And then we get Nynaeve and Elayne continuing to chase down the Black Ajah. While containing some great moments, these sections are markedly slower, and have characters that seem frozen in place to bicker ceaselessly. If these sections weren't in the book I probably would have finished weeks earlier! It does have a great ending, but there is so much crap to wade thru to get there.
Despite some slower or just poorly depicted parts, I really enjoyed Shadow Rising, and it definitely has some of the best moments in the series up to this point. You just have to deal with Nynaeve and Elayne annoyingly having the same argument over and over to get there!
