The Gate Thief by Orson Scott Card

2.0

Orson Scott Card has been my favorite author for fifteen years, and while I wi continue to read his work I am ready to reopen my favorite author spot. Card is no longer King.

It's not that The Gate Thief is particularly bad, it's just kind of okay. The Lost Gate was better. I think the plot is original enough, but as I get older Card's writing is starting to bug me more.

He does this thing where something small happens or someone says something, and then there are five pages of internal monologue with the protagonist analyzing every facet of what just happened. Things do not move quickly in the world of Card. This kind of writing made sense in Ender's Game when every character has a hidden agenda and Ender, the smartest kid ever, was untangling them. But in the Lost Gate, we're dealing with normal Ohio teenagers and I think it is misplaced.

Card has also gotten more reglious. The only part of the book I found objectionable was when our hero gets possessed by the devil for having premarital sex. A bit heavy handed don't you think Mr. Card?

Not my favorite, but not terrible. I'll read the third in the series when it comes out anyway, and I wi probably continue to seek out Card books I haven't read because the writing is good and the worlds interesting and well created, but I'm no longer the target audience.
