“I just came here to say, June Hayward is a bitch”
R. F. Kuang has my whole heart.
The execution of this book is phenomenal - never have I so instantly hated a main character, and for good reason. June Hayward’s opposition to growth, ignorance of nuance, and overall bad-person-hood had my stomach in knots from start to finish. The exploration of her whiteness (and often, June’s perception of it as a curse) is done so effectively, it’s hard to believe you’re not just chatting with the “woke” liberal white woman next door.
Such an amazing and timely piece.
