Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare
4.75

Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Honestly, this book is more flawed than the first two in this series but Cassandra Clare’s writing level is just so good that it feels like a disservice to rate it lower than a 4.75. This book is still fantastic and so much happened, even if some of the plot feels a bit familiar.

I love James and it was nice to see him unencumbered by the bracelet. Alistair and Thomas are stars. I liked Anna and Ari’s story arc. I like how Clare tackles the complexities of friendship with Lucie and Cordelia and Matthew and James.
The random truth-telling demon scene with Cordelia and Lucie just delighted me even though it was so random.

I really loved Matthew’s storyline around drinking and recovery, and I appreciate Clare tackling this important and difficult topic. I did want more for Matthew on the romance front, even though I can understand the decision that tackling both in the same book wasn’t reasonable. I wish the Matthew/Cordelia storyline hadn’t gone quite so far but the resolution wasn’t bad.

I was really sad about Christopher. He was a favorite for me. Though I’m not a fan of Grace, I loved how Christopher saw her and recognized who she was when no one else did. I liked their friendship storyline. I appreciate that Clare reminds us that in this world, Shadowhunters die young and the deaths often feel senseless, but this one felt unnecessary somehow.

Seeing Jesse alive was kind of delightful and he and Lucie together are so cute. I love how he blossoms under Will and Tessa’s love.

I did feel like there was a bit of a plot hole in the whole Bileal/James possession situation in that doesn’t James argue he won’t let Bileal posess him even if Matthew is tortured but then turns around and allows it later? I understand James’ plan but felt like them arguing against it with Bileal then switching gears just didn’t make sense. Maybe I missed something but I felt like there was a plot hole or misstep there.

I am sad to be ending my time in the Shadowhunter universe for now, but so glad another series is coming starting next year! I would honestly love to see more from the Last Hours crew someday.
