I was a little let down by how quickly Anne's childhood went by in the first book, and how this one started with her as a young adult and established career. I felt more disconnected from her in this second book as she seems less introspective. There are moments of reflection and emotions but it was more focused on the community than Anne herself.

The addition of the six year old twins, Davy and Dora, felt a bit off to me. Davy takes up almost all the space while Dora is barely mentioned or explored. I would have expected Anne to be curious and encouraging of Dora speaking her mind, but instead she tends to overlook her like everyone else. She felt a little incongruous to the character I got to know in the first book, so I'll be interested to see how she continues developing.
