lamergirl 's review for:
The Golden Fool
by Robin Hobb
I think I liked this second book more than the first in the trilogy, and I commend Hobb for not making Buckkeep seem too stifling or boring, even when we were mainly stuck in the castle and town for the majority of the book (which was a complaint I had about Farseer #2, Royal Assassin).
The building of the culture of the Outislanders was well done; giving them a more matriarchal society and so many of their own myths and customs made the tension between the two groups more interesting than constantly having to rehash the Red Ship Wars.
Being gay AND a homophobe? Pick a struggle, Fitz! I stand with my canceled gay wife-husband, the Fool, and charge Fitz with the crime of being the biggest dummy ever.
Dutiful and Fitz's relationship, AND Fitz and Chade's were great to continue to evolve. As Fitz says in the epilogue: "Cycles do be cycling" (paraphrase). I loved the depth and respect given to Thick's character.
The politics were fun in this book, even if the climax wasn't as exciting as past books. But it's making me nervous because things are going well. Probably too well for ole Robin Hobb. God knows how she'll destroy us in the final book in this series.
God I can't wait for Nettle to waltz into the castle and wreck Fitz. Please make it happen, Robin!
