Power Play by Maria Luis
4.0

f: Charlie (POV)
m: Duke

Although this book was a short one, just shy of 200 pages, it didn’t lack the emotional connection development that I feel like some short books do. My favorite parts of this book were the scenes where these two were able to learn more about one another, like the dart game with 21 questions, or the time they spent together on the ice. This one did fall a teensy bit short of the spice for me, only because it had a total of two scenes (one of them being in the epilogue) and I would’ve liked to have seen more of their explosive chemistry between the sheets. But, if this was the sacrifice made for the emotional connection scenes, then I’ll take it and keep my mouth shut.

As much as Duke comes off as a grump in their first run in, you can tell he has a soft spot for her in the meetings after. I thought it was a unique little twist on Charlie’s character that she used to play hockey as well, but because it never panned out to anything on a professional level, she decided to become a journalist instead in order to still be a part of the sports world.

It’s been a little while since I’ve devoured a book, but this one had a hold on me and left me hungry for more. I do see as the Blades Hockey series goes on, that each book gets a bit longer, so I’m excited to get a deeper feel into this author’s writing!

Favorite Quotes:
“I can be chivalrous. When, and if, I want to be.”
“That’s like saying you can be kind, in between bouts of dickish behavior.”

“Maybe it’s just a habit I don’t know how to break. Get up, head to practice, work out. Rinse and repeat. For over ten years, the life of a hockey player has been my normal. But it became a routine that no longer challenged me, or pushed me to be something greater. And then I met you.” -Duke

They say that love sometimes feels like you’re being hit by a bag of bricks. No. Love feels like you’ve been struck with multiple pucks flying at the five-hole, and you’ve got no gear on to protect yourself. -Duke
