The Secrets of My Life by Caitlyn Jenner

2.0

So I am a cis-gender straight caucasian female. Naturally I cannot begin to comprehend the struggles a transgender person goes through. I am very privileged in that aspect and I know it. I also find every person has the right to deal with their issues the best way for them. Nonetheless, I have a few opinions on this book and on Bruce / Caitlyn Jenner.

While listening to this, I feel for Bruce. The struggles he had to go through. The time he grew up in, being this famous athlete in the public spotlight while in private struggling with his sexual identity and not even having a word for what he is going through. It must have been so hard. I applaud him for being his true self and going public with his story and his thoughts. Especially being part of this specific family, having to answer to the Kardashians, being a (sometimes really terrible and absent) father to many children. His mother being even older and having grown up in a different world basically. Wow! So much respect.

Caitlyn though.... wow! She is so shallow, superficial, ignorant, arrogant and stupid. The more you get to know her, the more you start to hate her. You would think, she would inform herself about transgender issues and the community. That she‘d discuss important issues that non binary individuals are facing every day. How society has evolved but needs to evolve so much further to be accepting to everyone who doesn’t fit the general assumption of what it means to be male or female or that we even have only two genders that we think are the only option. Many, many people don’t fit into one of the two categories, there is so much inbetween and everyone should be fine with exploring this if they want/need to.
I mean, she does mention that transgender people commit suicide more often than cis gender people and that they get bullied and in some countries get prosecuted. In about 5 sentences. That’s it. How disappointing!
The rest of the time she is talking about her struggles to find the right dress and the stress about choosing high heels. How proud she is to have accomplished the art of applying lipliner without a mirror. That she naturally cannot attend a girls night without wearing the right nail polish. Because, you know: a woman isn’t a woman if she is not wearing nail polish and obviously cannot attend a ladies night without it. Every other sentence is facepalm worthy. There is so much to being a woman. But all Caitlyn Jenner cares about is fashion and makeup. Oh!! And let us not forget about her damn Grande Vanilla Latte from freaking Starbucks! That was discussed about 10 times in this book. That she needs her stupid Starbucks coffee.... God damn! I don’t believe this is a good and accurate depiction of transgender issues and I hope that no woman (cis- or transgender or genderfluid) thinks that finding the perfect high heels to match the designer dress you’re wearing today is what it means to be a woman. Wow.... I mean. It’s like everything went wrong here. I still hope Caitlyn Jenner is happy. She should be. Everyone should be. I just also hope if she continues to publish content it is more thought through than this mess.
