Washington Black by Esi Edugyan

Sorry but I just didn’t love this. The first part was so good, very good in parts and then it felt rushed. I can liken it to a four course meal.. a wonderful menu, then the dishes coming out looking fantastic but whisked away before I had time to devour and enjoy them. What was a pretty momentous trip out of the plantation to the Arctic was not fully described in a way that made me feel the transition...and although Washington was endearing there just wasn’t enough character ...so the places (especially the places) and the people and the plot were just not meaty enough for me. Too many coincidences. Basically it felt rushed. Tho there were a few paragraphs that were just beautiful.
I liked the theme of freedom that ran through it but by the end I was just looking forward to it being over and being free of it myself.
Not great book in my mind..
