Steampunk und Schokoladenkuchen
Zuerst einmal liebe ich die wundervollen Illustrationen (insbesondere jene die Stadtansichten zeigen). Zusammen mit der Geschichte vermengt sich alles zu einer richtig gemütlichen Atmosphäre (die Törtchen, die heiße Schokolade und der Schokoladenpudding tun da noch ihr eigenes dazu). Dass man mit viel Aufmerksamkeit außerdem einen Hinweis durch die Illustrationen erhält, halte ich auch für eine richtig nette Idee.
Das Konzept selber gefällt mir richtig gut (wie auch der Titel, der genau meinem Geschmack entspricht). Auch das Steampunk-Setting hat es mir wirklich angetan und ich hab' mich gefreut, dass beiläufig auch ein wenig Diversität eingebaut wurde. Zusätzlich haben mir auch die Exzerpte aus dem fiktiven Handbuch zugesagt, die teilweise auch wirklich nützlich erschienen und immer recht amüsant beschlossen wurden.
Allerdings erwies sich die Ausarbeitung der Geschichte letztendlich als weniger kreativ als ich des Anfangs wegen, welcher wirklich reizend und einfallsreich ist, angenommen hatte. Die Geschichte selber bedient sich des recht geläufigen Schemas "gut gegen böse" und auch wenn dieses leicht nuanciert dargestellt wird, hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass dieser Aspekt etwas komplexer ausgearbeitet würde.
Der Schreibstil ist auch sehr handlungsorientiert, was leider zumeist nicht meinem Geschmack entspricht, da ich es lieber habe, wenn Bücher etwas verweilen. In der Geschichte kommen recht viele Charaktere vor, denen ich mich jedoch (bis auf ein paar anfängliche Ausnahmen) nie wirklich nahe gefühlt habe.
Aufgrund dieser Elementen liest sich das Buch meiner Meinung nach auch etwas jünger als angegeben (würde das Buch -zumindest zum Vorlesen- eher ab 6-7 Jahren empfehlen statt ab 10).

 

Steampunk and Chocolate Cake

First off, I absolutely love the wonderful illustrations (especially those showing cityscapes). Paired with the story, everything blends together to create a really cozy atmosphere (the little cakes, the hot chocolate, and chocolate puddings certainly play their part). I also think that the illustrations offer a hint relating to the resolution if one pays additional attention is a really nice touch.

I'm really fond of the concept itself (and of the title for the German edition, which matches my taste perfectly). The steampunk setting is really charming as well, and I was pleased to see a bit of casual diversity woven into it. Additionally, I quite liked the excerpts from the fictional handbook, some of which even seemed genuinely useful and always concluded in a rather fun way.

However, the story's execution ultimately turned out to be less creative than the very delightful and imaginative beginning had lead me to believe. The story itself relies on the rather common "good vs evil" trope, and even though it's presented with slight nuances, I would have liked for this aspect to be developed further and with more complexity.

The writing style is also very action-oriented, which, unfortunately, doesn't usually suit my taste, as I prefer books to linger a bit more. There are quite a lot of characters in the story, but I never really felt close to them (aside from some exceptions at the beginning).

Because of these elements, I also think the book reads a bit younger than middle-grade (I'd probably recommend the book for ages 6-7, at least for reading aloud).
