Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton

Y'all, this was... not good. I never expected this series to be any kind of great literature, but I appreciate an entertaining trashy novel here and there (I can laugh at it if nothing else). The first few books in the series were pretty fun mysteries, trope-heavy and contrived, but fun.

This novel was not fun for me AT ALL. The supernatural crime drama plots that I'd come to expect were barely present in this one. The dialogue was frustrating and repetitive; the characters were irritating. I'm so sick of reading about characters getting sexually assaulted or violently raped (the number of times the word "rape" comes up in this series so far makes me want to tear my hair out), especially because it's handled pretty poorly imo. I'm also sick of how, out of the few non-white characters introduced, a disproportionate number of those are villains. It's kind of a racist mess.

I wanted to read something light and easy - this was not what I had anticipated.
