Watership Down
by Richard Adams
This book was a slow burn for me, and I wasn’t expecting it to impact me in the way it did. I don’t even like fighting/adventure books, but something about the scrappy tricksters in this story were so delightful to me. By the middle of the story, I was pretty hooked on the relationships and personalities, and by the end, the ideas of myth-making, legacy, and ancestral gifts really unexpectedly moved me. I will say that sexism thinly-veiled as “just how rabbits do it” was pretty tiring throughout the book, but I personally decided to set it aside to be able to enjoy the story (because I did get a bit agitated when I thought too much about the lady rabbits of the book). All in all, though, a really good read.
