Faithless in Death by J.D. Robb
4.0

Called to the murder of an up and coming artist, something about the situation does not sit well with Eve. Is it the two wine glasses in the bedroom? Or the fact that it took an hour for the woman who found the body to call it in? Or that she had her lawyer with her when they reached her?

As she digs deeper, the questions continue to pile up. Soon she is involved with the FBI and Interpol, investigating a global organization with sinister goals.

This entry in the series is smooth as silk. The formula just flows. We interact with Eve's team and their co-horts. We touch base with friends like Mavis. The newest uniformed member of her crew gets to shine. It's a joy to read. That's why it's four stars.

And yet... The subject here is huge. It's almost ripped from the headline because it is inspired by so much of what we've seen of political and religious leaders. It feels like it's too much to take down in one book. This could have been an opponent who gave Eve trouble. Who maybe took more than one book to completely be defeated.

Eve has more than one nemesis: the candy thief, the vending machines, Dickhead and Summerset. The only big one is the ghost of her past and even that is starting to wear down and be resolved. It's wonderful that Eve and her team, with the help of Roarke, Nadine and their friends are so good at what they do and the endings are so clean.

I think I'd just like to see her challenged a little more.
