The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
2.0
Rating: 2/5
Pros: The eccentricites of Dr. Tillman(many of which could be abided by), his many references to genetic science which I found illuminating. This isn't a run-in-the-mill humourous take on nerd thinking but there are ample moments of being a nerd just laid out in front of you without making it a point of entertainment.
Cons: Predictable plot, unengaging pace of storytelling, extremely sappy ending- both hurried and forced.
Plot: A genetics professor embarks on an ambitious project of finding his partner by devising a survey with a few questions laid out in priority. Needless to say, a woman who fails the first question in the list engages him and us the rest of the story.
Would not re-read.
Would not recommend.
Few favourite lines-
‘You can’t go through life not listening to music.’
I practised first for accuracy, then speed.
My level of consumption does not of itself qualify me as an alcoholic. However, I suspect that my strong antipathy towards discontinuing it might do so.
I diagnosed brain overload and set up a spreadsheet to analyse the situation.
When I was a university student, I had regularly driven to and from my parents’ home in Shepparton, and found that the long journeys had a similar effect to my market jogs. Research has shown that creativity is enhanced when performing straightforward mechanical tasks such as jogging, cooking and driving. Unobstructed thinking time is always useful.
Rosie almost ran towards Customs and then to the exit. I was several metres behind, carrying both bags. Something was obviously wrong. I caught up to her outside the automatic doors, reaching into her handbag. ‘Cigarette,’ she said. She lit a cigarette and took a long drag. ‘Just don’t say anything, okay? If I ever needed a reason to give up, I’ve got one now. Eighteen and a half hours. Fuck.’ It was fortunate that Rosie had told me not to say anything. I remained silent but shocked at the impact of addiction on her life.
I love New York. The layout is so logical, at least uptown from 14th Street.
