The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka

4.0

What a wild ride! Reading this as I moved to Spain for my year abroad was an experience, but I think the time it took me to read this allowed me to be even more compelled by the narrative than I would otherwise. The complex Sri Lankan politics, the mind-bending descriptions and the use of second person are very discombobulating but made this book feel so rich and vivid that I can see myself returning to it sometime in the future. Maali was such a tragic and m personally relatable protagonist for me and his complicated relationships with both DD and Jaki made the reading experience so heart wrenching at times. Also, I think the comparisons to Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita are extremely apt, especially in the more surreal moments in the narrative.
