it started slow, i’ll be honest. i’m not one for haunted house horror stories. they bore me usually as really what more can they add that hasn’t already been told? but this was different. the moment we hit that jarring change from creepy paranormal to jake’s journal in the last quarter of the book i was completely hooked. i was completely engaged, my eyes going as fast as they could while still understanding the words in front of me. it was creepy, it was disheartening, it was enlightening, it was bittersweet, even.  i would give anything to read this book again for the first time
