The Psychology of Time Travel
by Kate Mascarenhas
Well worth your time!
Initially, I was dubious about the simple, direct prose and the use of some cliches in the writer's characterisations but I feel the novel needs that sort of clarity to help guide the reader through a complex narrative.
In terms of content there are a lot of seemingly disparate ideas in this book. It presents itself as a time travel story and also a murder mystery. However, it builds many of the expectations of those genres in a way that is original, surprising and has a lot of heart.
The "psychology" that Mascarenhas explores is less about the ethics of time travel itself and quite unexpectedly it delves into issues about work-place bullying and the stigma of mental illness.
I also enjoyed the way this book never questions the 'how' or 'why' of time travel: it's just a fact of life within the novel's world.
