Briar Rose by Jane Yolen

5.0

As I have stated in past reviews, I LOVE historical fiction because it teaches me about history that I was not taught in school and it does it in an interesting way. This book is not exception and it is even better because it had realistic fiction, historical fiction, and a fairy tale retelling all meshed into one book!

Briar Rose is Gemma's story although Becca is our main character. Becca is a journalist and when her grandmother, Gemma, dies, she promises her that the will find out the truth behind her grandmother's constant retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" as her life story. All Becca has is the story that Gemma told, a box of photos and documents, and the promise. With this, Gemma begins to learn more and more about her mysterious grandmother. And through the story, we, the reader, learn about a part of the Holocaust that is not often discussed or taught: the persecution of homosexuals and a extermination camp called Chelmno.
