Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown

5.0

I wish this was required reading for all high school students. I know it's too long for that, but even taking excerpts from it for students to read would be greatly beneficial.
I grew up watching Westerns where the US Cavalry is the hero and indigenous peoples are savage blood thirsty villains, where the first Thanksgiving is celebrated with no mention of the horrific atrocities done to indigenous peoples, where the story of Pocahontas is made into a palatable love story.
It was not the true story. It was a lie.
Reading the real history of what happened to the original people's of North America by the US Government was heartbreaking as well as rage inducing. The United States owes them so much. We can never make up for the land stolen or the lives lost, but we must start with something.
The only way to make progress is for the truth to be told, and this book does just that.
