A Kiss of Shadows

I TRIED! I'm sorry to my friend Rodger -- but I tried!
I think ultimately we can just chalk this up to: I need to stop attempting to read early/mid 2000s paranormal urban fantasy romance.
I enjoyed some of it back then, but it is not to my taste these days, it seems. The overall tone and vibe of them is pretty samesy and just not to my taste. The kind of snarky "ha, look what a badass I am and how dark and gritty this world is" and slightly irreverent, in a corny way, writing styles don't do anything for me.
The "she doesn't know she's the most gorgeous creature any of us have ever seen" thing is beyond annoying. I get that everyone can have insecurities, even the most gorgeous of women... but you at the very least are aware of how people around you react to your looks. You might not agree that you're as gorgeous as people say... but you know that people generally comment on you being a stone cold stunner.
The cheesy dialogue. Every dude throwing himself at the female main character. I think the selkie sex was the tipping point for me with this one, though.
I legit was cackling with the ridiculousness of it -- dude orgasms andimmediately TURNS INTO A SEAL AND FLOPS OFF THE BED?!??!?!! THEN HE CRAWLS OUT OF THE SEAL SKIN AND THEY FALL ASLEEP CUDDLING INSIDE OF IT?!??!! hahahahhahaha I could not deal.
But honestly, a few goofy ass sex scenes is doable for me, as a reader -- it was the combination of that along with everything else. And I just was NOT getting intrigued by the story enough.
