As the Crow Flies by Melanie Gillman

5.0

I LOVED this. As a mixed-race, queer, non-binary person who was once a Christian, this hit me in all the feels. Charlie is in a place where she is with a group of seemingly white, cishet people who use exclusive language and expose her to microaggressions constantly. She deals with what a lot of us deal with everyday - when to say something and when to simply swallow it.

On top of that, she is trying to tackle with whether or not she believes God exists and is guiding her life.

From language like "whitening" and "cleansing" in the same sentence, to a complete white-washing of racial relations and slavery apologism, to an extreme form of feminism that adheres to strict gender lines, to an erasure of historical same-sex relationships, she's dealing with a lot. Thank goodness she learns more about and befriends Sydney. I can't wait to see what happens next!
