The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman

4.0

This is a simply wonderful, creative, dark picture book. Neil Gaiman again wins with innovative and beautiful retellings of old tales, with a hint of tragedy and hope.

I will always love the way he employs language, and the illustrations are simply breathtaking. I read this first on audio three years ago and that was a mistake, the art adds a gorgeous level and this is a story to be savoured. And as there are no names in the novel, it really does help reading it physically. "She was herself, and the name she had been born with had been eaten by time and lack of use."
