Gone with the Wind
by Margaret Mitchell
This book was very hard for me to get through and I can admit it probably was wasn’t for me. But with saying that it was very well written. I would not by any means call this a romance and maybe had I gone into this with a different mindset my feelings towards this book would be different. The first half of this book talks about the war in great length and detail with very little else. So as far as the historical aspect of this book it was very interesting to get a more story like picture of what went on besides just historical facts. You get the feelings and emotions and see in great detail how the south felt, but that’s not what I was wanting to read in the moment. There were parts of this book I didn’t really care for and some I really enjoyed, mostly any part with Scarlet and Rhett prior to marriage and yes I mean PRIOR because after they get married I feel like it went downhill and her epiphany came to little to late. But I also feel like Rhett was also at fault for making jokes about everything so she never knew what he was and wasn’t series about. I was so excited for them that when it finally happened I was so upset with how it played out. I’m surprised with how much I grew to like Melanie. She was portrayed for so long and this helpless, spineless girl but in the end she was so kind and compassionate and stood her ground where it mattered. Scarlett may have been a spoiled, self centered brat most of her life but it helped her and the ones around her survive the war and rebuilding the aftermath. Do I think she was in the right always? Absolutely not, but I also think others let her get away with things for too long, that they catered to her downfall instead of helping to guild her when the occasions arose. I wish we could have gotten more of her other 2 kids I feel like they just got left out if most of the story and half the time i forget she even had them. This book was just depressing. There were no real and true happy moments and there wasn’t even remotely close to a happy ending. The ending was sad and depressing and makes your heart ache with hope for a better outcome that won’t ever happen. Where I can’t say I hated this book because the book itself isn’t bad, I can’t say I love it either. So if your into historical literature this is probably perfect, but if you need some happy and some romance this book is not it.
