Slow Cooker Revolution: One Test Kitchen. 30 Slow Cookers. 200 Amazing Recipes. by America's Test Kitchen
5.0
I've had this out for the maximum time allowed by Siouxland Libraries twice now and finally have to bite the bullet and purchase - I think it's really fantastic. I'm a fan of Cooks Illustrated/ATK and I love all their nerdy, sciency stuff - but also the fact that they don't shy away from using an ingredient or technique that works, even if it isn't *foodie approved*. The slow cooker would be one of these items (as is the Campbells condensed cheese soup which is used in this book in the Creamy Cauliflower with bacon (stinky but delicious) to great effect). I like to cook but I like to eat more and there are many days when I just want to have something good waiting for me when suppertime rolls around, and the slow cooker does a great job for me - and taste-wise, the recipes in this book are way above most I have tried. Most highly recommended!
*NOTE - I have read the reviews that criticize the prep time this recipes take, and I understand that many people want to just dump everything in the crockpot and go. But - I am LAZY, and I don't think the prep time is any sort of deal breaker. 20 extra minutes for something delicious is ok by me.*
A few favorites:
Bachelor Beef Stew - so tasty and with ingredients you can keep on hand in the freezer
Easy Asian-Style Beef Stew
Fancy Pork Stew with Fennel and Prunes
Moroccan Beef Chili with Chickpeas and Raisins
Smoky Sausage and Bean Chili
Rustic Sausage, Lentil and Swiss Chard Sauce
Meatballs and Marinara
Swedish Meatballs
Creamy Cauliflower with Bacon
Roast Beef Hash
The one recipe that did not turn out so well for me was the Curried Chicken Breasts, but I think they fault may have been with my curry powder. I'd try it again anyway.
