"The Hunt for Red October" is one of those books that hooked me, and kept me reading for hours. Tom Clancy managed to grab me with a plot full of suspense and tension. I've read a lot of research went on this book, but knowing nothing about submarines, cannot vouch for it. I did find the extensive descriptions on the different mechanisms and back stories of minor characters bordering on excruciating - the book could have been quite a few pages shorter without really leaving anything out. I was also bothered a bit by the artificial mystery around a certain letter that everyone and their dog had read, and that is only presented to the readers very late into the book. Asides from these minor details, I quite enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Tom Clancy's work.
