I appreciate the ambition, and I can say the artwork is stunning to look at, but I had next to no clue what was happening for most of the book. It won awards and has so many great reviews, so maybe there's just something I am missing.
There were glimmers of something good, like when Vep spots two others from her homeland and is rejected by them, but even these moments were hindered by a lack of character depth and world-building. It's like you're expected to suddenly know and understand everything about the worlds and characters you're reading about. This was made especially harder by the artwork. While the artwork was beautiful, I found it hard to engage with. The lack of any clear architectural structures and the colour palette meant it was difficult and challenging to interpret where the characters were at any given moment. I understand that there is an authorial intention behind this, and I really loved the author's note explaining the context, but I should have been able to engage with the visual story without reading the author's explanation.
This just wasn't for me.
