Heart of a Dog
by Mikhail Bulgakov
The version I read was actually Karpelson's translation, which seemed definitely up to the task - curious, though, that there doesn't seem to be a lot of information about Karpelson himself on the Internet other than the fact that he's translated a handful of Bulgakov's works.
A fun read, with lots of allegory to choose from, depending on the angle from which you read it.
