Constance by Matthew FitzSimmons
4.0

Constance is a page-turning and creative scientific thriller that is the first of a two-book series. It’s set in the near-ish future (15-20 years from now) where if you have millions of dollars to spare, human cloning is a reality.

The protagonist, Constance, was gifted her own clone by her aunt. But when she goes in for her routine memory upload, she wakes in her clone’s body (meaning her original self is dead) with an 18-month memory lag. Determined to fill in her memory blanks, Con pursues a quest to investigate her own murder, while trying to evade those who have been sent to recover her.

The plot was fast-paced and kept me on the edge of my seat, but the story also poses thought-provoking questions on the moral and ethical dilemmas of human cloning and its effect on identity. I picked up strong Blake Crouch and Black Mirror vibes, so if you enjoy those brands of fiction, you should definitely pick up a copy of Constance!
