Quality-wise, I’d say Aurora Burning was definitely on the same level as the first book - a fun, action packed adventure through the galaxy with a cast of characters I’ve grown to love for each of their unique personalities. I loved the jabs at stupid human behaviour (like stopping to smoke two full centuries after first discovering it killed you) and enjoyed every single well-crafted piece of dialogue.
The only thing I’d criticise would once again be that, similar to the first book, there’s a bit of an action-overload. Though I think this definitely varies from reader to reader, I felt a certain predictability at times, as most action sequences follow the same pattern. There’s a goal, then there’s a plan, then they carry out the plan and things go smoothly until everything goes to shit (usually due to the sudden appearance of one of their numerous enemies) right before they can achieve their goal, and they manage to escape by a hair’s breadth. And for some reason Aurora always, always ends up unconscious at the end of those plans lmao. But I have to say that this pattern somewhat lessened after the first half of this book. It got less repetitive, but the plot still went pretty heavy on the action - though it’s very well written, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think the action sequences are boring at all (it IS a galaxy adventure novel after all) I’m just saying that one should be aware there’s a lot of them and things might get a bit tedious if that’s not your cup of tea.
All in all I really enjoyed the book. It’s definitely a page-turner, and like I said - I love the characters! I feel like I know them all very well, and their dynamics are so well crafted, which I think is very difficult to do with that many POVs. The multiple narrators in general are nicely done - all unique voices, all believable, and all important for the story.
The plot had a few mean little twists that I didn’t anticipate, and a few that I did, but it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat! Especially that last chapter! Very excited to see how it all ends!
