Let me start out by saying Tshuma has a real gift for prose, which I was delightfully surprised by! However, this book is truly weighed down by its plot. Athandwa is a character we ultimately don’t learn much about, and what little we do know is… let’s say uninviting. One could make a case for this being a feature, not a bug, but it certainly made this story a bit of a drag to get through. Tshuma clearly had a lot she wanted to explore, but ultimately everything is merely touched on and comes off as somewhat shallow. Also loses many points for having pseudo-incest and ending with out protagonist interning at Amazon stand-in to… change the system from the inside?
