Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Afia

The promise of this book is incredible! Our MC gets taken when she's young, but she fights off her captor and escapes, saving a bunch of other kidnapped women of color. Now we're a few years ahead, and these mysterious murders pop up in her neighborhood. Black girls are getting picked off one by one. But who is doing it??!

I loved the premise... But the execution was lacking. A lot of other reviewers are saying this reads like a first draft, and I whole-heartedly agree. The writing and editing leaves a lot to the imagination. I also feel like a lot of "clues" weren't wrapped up or explained. And when you find out who the killer is, you realize this person was kind of random.

I enjoyed it, but definitely isn't going down to my most memorable reads of 2024.
