Ninth House
by Leigh Bardugo
Magic, ghosts, secret societies, and a murder mystery?
Talk about a phenomenal mix of genres that turns out to be a pretty fascinating read.
Ninth House follows Alex (Galaxy) Stern who finds herself at Yale after being found nearly dead at a crime scene. At Yale she ends up connecting with Darlington, who is her guide to teaching the history and workings of the schools’ secret magic society. But things aren’t all they seem and when people go missing or turn up murdered, Alex is left to her own devices to figure out who’s behind this series of unfortunate events, while dodging death herself.
This was such a fascinating read. While it did start off a bit slow because of the world building and extensive history, when it did pick up, boy oh boy I was hooked. I really enjoyed seeing Alex grow into her confidence, especially when dealing with the Greys and Turner. Her sarcasm was a great addition to the seriousness and darkness of the plot. I will say that I had a feeling about what happened pretty early on but definitely wasn’t expecting a lot of what happened in between so definitely still kept me intrigued!
I’m looking forward to the sequel to see more of Alex and Dawes working together and hoping for another great mystery to solve!
