A Destiny of Dragons
by TJ Klune
I really wanted to like this, since I had enjoyed the previous book, "The Lightning-Struck Heart", but this story just wasn't my cup of tea.
For me, the book itself could have been a lot shorter. A lot of discussions were repeated over and over again, and there wasn't much that actually happened. I would have enjoyed the banter, the humor and the adventure more if it would have been more concise.
Also, I quite liked the first book because it didn't take itself too seriously. It was funny, idiotic at times, a parody of itself, but completely and utterly refreshing. While it did the same things here, not taking itself seriously, I felt like the tone shifted drastically at times, becoming very serious, and then shifting back to jokes. In my opinion, I would have liked it to be one or the other, jesting or serious, but both at the same time didn't work for me.
There is also a new guy, Ruv, who has the potential to be Sam's cornerstone (aside from Ryan): but if he could play that big of a role in Sam's life, even if the latter doesn't want it, why don't they at least talk to each other? We had to wait 200 pages to get at least a conversation between the two of them, and it lasted all but a page and a half. I don't know why, but it didn't make any sense to me. The premise of the book made Ruv out to be an important new addition to the story, someone who could shake the foundation of Sam's world, which I found interesting. But they maybe talk three times during the whole book; I feel like Ruv hardly contributed anything at all to the story. Maybe this will change in the sequel, I don't know.
This being said, I don't believe I will be reading said sequel. I wanted to finish this book, and I did, but I don't think I can continue.
This doesn't mean that I don't respect TJ Klune as an author or his books. I have seen a lot of reviews stating that they absolutely love this book, and I'm glad for it. It's not because it wasn't my cup of tea, that others can't enjoy it.
