The final book of the Harry Potter series follows Harry, Ron and Hermione as they set out to destroy Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes - objects containing fragments of his soul. Without the safety of Hogwarts, the trio faces constant danger while the wizarding world falls deeper under Voldemort’s control. The story builds to the climactic Battle of Hogwarts, where sacrifices, revelations and long-awaited confrontations finally bring the series to its end.

  • One of the main themes is Sacrifice. This is shown throughout the novel - Lily Potter sacrificing herself for Harry, Harry choosing to walk into the Forbidden Forest and Dobby giving his life to save Harry from Malfoy Manor.
  • Another main theme is Death and Acceptance. The Deathly Hallows symbolise different attitudes toward mortality: the Elder Wand represents denial and obsession with power, the Resurrection Stone represents longing and grief and the Invisibility Cloak represents acceptance and humility. Harry ultimately chooses acceptance, showing that facing death with courage is the most human and powerful act.
  • Another main theme is Loyalty. This is because the trio’s friendship is tested more than ever in this book. Conflicts - like Ron temporarily leaving - reveal the strain of fear and hopelessness. Yet their loyalty always pulls them back together. These bonds are shown to be a counterforce to Voldemort, who isolates himself through fear and power.
