Beetle & the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne

4.0

A cute and lively, spooky-themed graphic novel about a goblin witch, her ghostie BFF, and the super-talented childhood friend who’s just come back to town. Beetle & the Hollowbones is an effortlessly fun fusion of magic, modernity, and Halloweeny vibes that’s readable all year round.

I don’t like praising books on their merits as moral vehicles, so let’s just say that Beetle & the Hollowbones will be relatable to lots of middle-grade readers while having some good things to say about family expectations, how relationships grow and might change, and celebrating your friends even when it seems like they’re more talented and successful than you.

The casual queerness is also A+.
