The Year of What If by Phaedra Patrick

5.0

I really enjoyed reading “The Year of What If” by Phaedra Patrick. I do own one of her other books “The Library of the Lost and Found” and after having such an  entertaining time with ‘The Year of What If’, I’ll certainly be moving this up the ‘to read’ pile!

I really endeared to Carla, the main protagonist in the story and loved how her family’s devotion to superstition and mysticism, didn’t falter her love for them whatsoever. Believing the one hundred year old curse, that apparently was bestowed on only the women in the family, meant Carla always doubted lasting love and preferred to use logic and pragmatism to match make.

Cala’s re-enacted journey of her gap year travelling Europe, was exiting and very gripping. Remembering things differently to how they actually happened showed realism and maturity. When it’s insinuated that Carla’s future love could be based on her past ones, she re-visits the men that featured during that year, to see which one it could be. Little does she know she could be reading the ‘cards’ all wrong.

This is a great but subtle romance and an all round enjoyable read. I adored it and can happily recommend this book.
